Travel

There are two major airports on the island of Hawai’i (the Big Island), Kailua-Kona International Airport (KOA) and Hilo International Airport (ITO).

Flights are usually around $100 dollars cheaper when flying in and out of the Kona Airport.  Driving from the Kona Airport to the UH Hilo takes 1 hour and 30 minutes. Rental cars are available at the Kona Airport, please visit Enterprise Car Rentals to make a reservation.

See below for driving directions from Kona International Airport to UH Hilo.

If flying into Hilo, use the Uber app or ask the Information podium at the airport to call a taxi. Taxis are prohibited from soliciting customers at the airport so a ride will need to be organized; this is not difficult and will be quick. Rental cars are also available at the Hilo Airport. Please visit Enterprise Car Rentals to make a reservation.

See below for driving directions from Hilo International Airport to UH Hilo.

Shuttles from Hotels

We will provide a free shuttle to and from the conference at UH Hilo in the mornings and evenings, about a 10-15 minutes drive. The University shuttle van will pick up at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, the conference hotel, but participants choosing to stay at other accommodations are welcome to access the shuttle. Shuttles will leave at 20 minutes intervals around the start of the conference, exact times will be forthcoming.

Be advised that Uber and other ride share apps are easy to use in Hilo and relatively inexpensive.

Parking at the University

The conference dates fall during Summer session therefore a parking permit is not needed. There is no cost for parking. Park in the main parking lot at the university. You will pass a small security station and veer right into the parking lot. Signs will read Zone 2. Park here.
